We are a local chapter of an international non-profit organization called Student Energy. The mission of Student Energy is to help “build the next generation of energy leaders who will accelerate the world’s transition to a sustainable energy future.” As an example of the types of actions taken by Student Energy, earlier this year they planned and hosted the first-ever indigenous student energy summit in Canada–bringing together first nations students from across the country to discuss the energy transition. Although the organization is based in Canada, Student Energy has chapters in 35 universities across 20 countries. Each chapter has slightly different priorities and missions, but all are part of a global community of young energy leaders.
For the UC Davis chapter, our mission is to build a community of student energy leaders, share cross-disciplinary knowledge about the energy system, and take action to accelerate the transition to a resilient, decarbonized, and equitable energy future.
What exactly will we be doing?
Student Energy will send out a regular email newsletter, host discussions every other week with knowledgeable and interesting speakers (from both within and outside of UC Davis), and plan social events to build community. Ultimately, however, the activities and priorities of Student Energy will be shaped by the members that choose to join and bring their passion and expertise with them. There are many possible projects that we can pursue, and we are actively looking for good ideas.
