Our prosperity and way of life depend on the provision and consumption of energy, yet our energy system is the largest contributor to climate change and many other environmental challenges. A fundamentally new approach to energy supply and use is needed that addresses the many complex interactions inherent in energy research and development. On the supply side, we need to mitigate the risks of fossil energy production while increasing the supply and competitiveness of low-carbon renewable sources. On the demand side, we have enormous opportunities to improve efficiency and change behaviors in ways that dramatically reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. In both cases, the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of our choices must be carefully understood and considered.
The Energy Graduate Group (EGG) provides the interdisciplinary training required to tackle the energy challenges of the 21st century and beyond.
Our mission is to produce graduates who will be energy leaders and experts in government, the private sector, and academia.
The EGG offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Energy Systems. Students take relevant coursework from across the UC Davis campus and conduct interdisciplinary research to address pressing environmental, economic, policy, and social challenges related to energy production and consumption facing California, the U.S., and the world. EGG is housed within the Energy and Efficiency Institute, which includes research centers, programs, and partnerships where students conduct research.
The energy industry in California, and around the world, currently has an unmet demand for professionals with interdisciplinary graduate training in energy. EGG graduates will use training in engineering, physical sciences, economics, environmental sciences, management, sociology, and policy to interact effectively with policymakers, engineers, scientists, and academics. Both Masters and Ph.D. students will prove to be the world’s next generation of leaders in sustainable energy solutions.
