CLTC Study Examines How Lighting Shapes Music Listening

A new study from the California Lighting Technology Center, published in Lighting Design + Application, looks at how indoor lighting conditions can change the way people respond to music. Participants listened to excerpts of happy and sad music under different lighting settings and rated their emotional experience and how well the music fit the space. Their feedback shows how light can shape the mood and feel of a listening environment.

MDSC Researcher Releases New Framework for Low-Carbon Concrete Adoption

The Materials Decarbonization and Sustainability Center has released a new paper on the adoption of novel low-carbon cement and concrete technologies. The study, led by PhD candidate Josefine Olsson, offers a clear way to judge when these materials are ready for use. It sets out a step-by-step method to weigh performance, environmental impact, and real-world feasibility. The framework gives builders and engineers a tool to spot risks, fill gaps, and move promising materials toward pilot projects and full deployment.

Josefine will share more about this work at a special webinar on Tuesday, December 9, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. The session will cover life-cycle emissions, future SCM supply, and a performance-based way to design lower-carbon concrete.

UC Davis Hosts Successful Global Energy Managers Workshop

On November 13, UC Davis hosted the seventh annual Global Energy Managers Workshop, which brought together campus and health-system energy leaders from across the UC system and beyond. The full-day program featured UC-wide report-outs, a keynote on energy and decarbonization at UCSF Health, and sessions on commissioning, storage, heat pumps, and new AI-driven tools. Recordings of all sessions are now available.
