New UC Davis Tool Lets Anyone Trace the Causes Behind America's Shifting Carbon Footprint
A free interactive dashboard from the UC Davis Energy Institute is giving policymakers, researchers, and curious citizens a novel look at why carbon dioxide emissions rise and fall — not just by how much.
The tool, called “Drivers of Change in CO₂ Emissions,” applies a technique known as LMDI decomposition (Log Mean Divisia Index) to break state-level emissions data into five distinct forces: population growth, economic activity, shifts in the composition of the economy, energy intensity, and the carbon intensity of energy supply. Users can select any U.S. state and any time window, then watch a waterfall chart show how each factor pushed emissions up or down over that period.
The distinction matters. A state might show only a modest decline in emissions overall, but the dashboard could reveal that cleaner energy is doing all the heavy lifting while economic growth and population are significantly increasing— a dynamic that would be invisible in a simple emissions trend line.
The tool tracks goods and services sectors separately and adjusts GDP figures to 2024 dollars, making long-run comparisons more meaningful. Charts are downloadable, and a raw data view lets analysts dig into the underlying numbers.
