UC Davis assistant professor Catherine Brinkley wrote an op-ed piece for the Sacramento Bee titled, “An incendiary idea for clean energy and rural job growth.” In the article, Dr. Brinkley argues that California could use climate change funding to help spur renewable energy businesses by harvesting dry wood in fire-prone forests. By removing dry wood from rural areas, California could reduce wildfires, which destroy communities, are costly, and release carbon as they burn This timber could then be used in California to expand incineration and district heating opportunities, further decreasing carbon emissions and advancing California’s environmental objectives and supporting economic growth.
