New Progress on Mexico’s Emerging Lighting R&D Center
In fall 2017, the Mexican Ministry of Energy awarded funding to the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in collaboration with UC Davis to establish a lighting technology and design research center known as the Centro de Tecnología en Iluminación (CTI). CTI will accelerate the adoption and development of energy-efficient lighting and daylighting technologies, and build capacity and training programs for Mexico’s lighting industry through university and industry collaborations. Energy Graduate Group Student Receives DECOR Fellowship Award
Energy Graduate Group student Kabian Ritter received the Engineering Dean’s Collaborative Research (DECOR) award. This award will fund collaborative research to investigate the induction of magnetic properties into 2D and 3D host materials as a result of metal species being introduced. Congratulations Kabian!
Researchers Test DIY Portable Air Cleaners
The Western Cooling Efficiency Center tested 2 types of Do-It-Yourself portable air cleaner (standard box fans modified with added filtration on the suction side of the box fan). Researchers found that a standard box fan modified with four 2-inch filters on the fan intake, constructed for less than $75 in materials, was estimated to perform similarly to residential portable air cleaners in terms of clean air delivered for approximately one-third the cost. Residential Electrification in Sacramento & Its Impact on Residential Appliance Sales
In a new report, Institute faculty, staff, and students investigate and quantify the market for appliances related to residential electrification and decarbonization, using the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) as a case study. Lighting Education Videos Released
The California Lighting Technology Center released 5 new videos focused on 2019 Title 24, Part 6 lighting requirements. Each video dives into specific lighting topics in the current Energy Code and is designed to increase knowledge and implementation of code-compliant lighting in California’s nonresidential and residential buildings.
