Research Interests: Remote and off-grid power, energy storage, microhydro systems, agrovoltaics, Smart Home technologies, repurposed electronics, passive energy systems, distributed energy infrastructure, environmental design, and energy resilience for emergency preparedness.

Dave MacDonald is an inventor and developer with a background in software engineering and renewable energy systems. He has extensive experience building and testing applications across the Apple ecosystem, including HomeKit, CarPlay, and firmware for in-development hardware products. Dave holds multiple provisional patents focused on low-energy mechanical systems and passive energy innovations. He is passionate about repurposing electronics for sustainable infrastructure and is particularly interested in the intersection of distributed energy, environmental design, and resilient infrastructure. Prior to graduate study, Dave served on his hometown’s Parks and Recreation board and helped lead the successful restoration of a local park—an early experience that continues to shape his commitment to community-centered environmental work.
