Energy transitions require social and political engagement – but data on the political and public dimensions of energy policymaking has lagged technical and economic modelling. High spatial resolution public opinion data can help address this gap and improve the ways in which human factors are integrated into energy policymaking. This talk will outline approaches to cost-effectively measuring and assessing energy public opinion at high resolution in California, drawing on examples related to public safety power shut-offs, clean energy siting and climate adaptation.

Matto Mildenberger is an associate professor of political science at the University of California Santa Barbara. His research explores the politics of climate change and energy here in the United States. and around the world. At UCSB, Matto is the founding director of the 2035 Initiative, a university-based “think-and-do” tank that leverages empirical research, policy development, and media engagement to support energy policy change.
