The Social Cost of Carbon
This presentation will examine how interdisciplinary teams have calculated the social cost of carbon and how the metric is applied in regulatory decision-making. It will highlight the most recent scientific advances in this area while also addressing key uncertainties and open questions that remain.
Dr. Maximilian Auffhammer is the Avice M. Saint Professor at UC Berkeley. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in environmental science and resource economics from UMass Amherst and a Ph.D. in economics from UC San Diego. He joined UC Berkeley in 2003, where his research focuses on environmental and resource economics, climate and energy economics, and applied econometrics. He is a Fellow of AERE, a Research Associate at NBER, a Humboldt Fellow, and a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). At Berkeley, he has served as Chair and Vice Chair of the Academic Senate, Associate Dean in the Social Sciences, and Regional Associate Dean. His awards include the Campus Distinguished Teaching Award, Haas School’s Cheit Teaching Award (2017 & 2021), the Cozzarelli Prize, and the Sarlo Distinguished Mentoring Award. He is proud of co-founding the Berkeley Summer School. He loves mountains in winter, family time, and cost-effective ways to make the world better.
